TOP 50 Tactical Military Bulletproof Vests

The best body armor for use by both individuals and law enforcement officials.

TOP 12 Best Bulletproof Body Armor

When choosing best bulletproof vest, you should pay attention to the material of the protective plates. Rigid metal or ceramic inserts are used to stop a projectile fired from a machine gun or rifle. Models using multilayer synthetics disperse the force of its impact. This is enough to protect against shot, coarse shrapnel, or pistol bullets.

Some modern models are equipped with plates made of durable, but lighter weight materials, such as thermoplastic polymer.

Models are also available that reduce the impact of third-party factors. Thus, the use of a nomex coating ensures the fireproofing of the covers, and the special Thor Shield fabric provides resistance to electric current.

An important characteristic of the body armor is the protection class. It determines the amount of force that the plates can stop. The thinnest are models that correspond to class 1. Soft materials are used for their manufacture. The most resistant to damage are level 6a body armor, the plates of which can reach a thickness of 25 mm.

Do not forget about the convenience of using a bulletproof vest. As a rule, the most durable of them are large and heavy. This reduces the maneuverability of the wearer and provokes a rapid onset of fatigue. For private use, we do not recommend purchasing models weighing more than 5 kg.

It is necessary to determine the area of protection of the body armor. It determines the effectiveness of protection of human vital organs from damage. The optimal indicator of the protection area is 27%. However, the models corresponding to it are often distinguished by a large mass, which should also be taken into account when buying.

Body Armor Materials & Technologies

The chronology of the previous mini-series of articles on the history of European armor logically stopped at the period of World War II, when steel homogeneous body armor was last used. In the “post-war” period, pure steel armor was no longer used, with the exception of helmets. The interest is that the “post-war” is put in quotation marks for a reason – there were still too many wars. Already by the height of the Korean War, it became clear that the soldier on the battlefield still needs protection – and to a greater extent from shell fragments, mines and bombs, as well as the so-called. secondary – for example, the debris of a building destroyed by the explosion, rather than bullets.

Body Armor Materials & Technologies

It was then that the first body armor appeared in the modern sense of the word – armor, the main protection in which is provided by fabric. Now such equipment is referred to as “soft” body armor.

The first body armor fabric was nylon in a special, ballistic modification. One of the first body armor made of nylon was released in the States in the 50s and was called the M1951 USMC Armored Vest. It was intended for the United States Marine Corps, weighed 3.5 kg and only protected from shrapnel. It did not receive mass distribution, but many other modifications of body protection were released on its basis.

Until the Vietnam War and for some time after its start, the main body armor of the US Army was a nylon M-69 weighing 3.85 kg. He did not yet have reinforcements in the form of metal, ceramic or polymer plates, characteristic of modern army armored vehicles.

The first soft body armor made from aramid fibers appeared in the 1980s, and each of the Cold War parties developed them independently.

What is Aramid?

Aramid is a complex polymeric substance. The name is an abbreviation for the term “aromatic polyamide” in its English spelling. There are many types of aramid fabrics (materials made from aramid fibers), most of which are greenish yellow in color. The most widespread and well-known of them is Kevlar, produced in the USA; in the USSR, SVM, Terlon, Armos and some others were used.

Kevlar

In general, the main characteristic of aramid fabrics is their extremely high tensile strength. That is why a multilayer bag made of such fabric is able to stop a blunt pistol bullet, a “glass” of shot and a fragment with a low initial velocity. However, aramid can, albeit with difficulty, be cut or punctured. Therefore, for protection against sharp-pointed rifle or automatic bullets with high, on the order of several thousand joules, kinetic energy, aramid fabric by itself is not suitable. In addition, a “soft” body armor can be pierced with a combat knife made of good modern steel, with a tip hardness of the order of 60-65 HPC, and, paradoxically, shot from a powerful (with a tension of about 100 kg) crossbow with a bolt with an armor-piercing tip.

Semi-Rigid and Rigid Body Armor

These are shells in which “soft” protection in the form of a dozen or so layers of aramid fabric is combined with hard protection in the form of additionally installed plates made of various materials. Moreover, steel at the moment is already rarely used: it is too heavy, and at the same time it is far from being a record holder in terms of strength.

One of the world’s first “reinforced” body armor was the Soviet 6B1 and 6B2 (aka Zh-81 according to another classification). If the first was still an anti-fragmentation “armor” type, then the second, in addition to fragments, also provided protection from pistol bullets. According to the current classification 6B2, weighing 4.2-4.8 kg, depending on size, is considered a 2nd class body armor.

Its design included protective plates made of titanium alloy ADU-605-80, which were placed in “pockets” made of aramid fiber developed in the USSR. The thickness of the plates was 1.25-1.4 mm. The body armor bib consisted of 18 such plates arranged in two layers. It was a first-generation body armor, still far from ideal (since it did not protect against an automatic bullet), but its design influenced the subsequent course of engineering.

Semi-Rigid and Rigid Body Armor

By the way, 6B1 was developed and adopted by the Soviet army during the Afghan war. The US Army received the first bulletproof body armor only at the time of the Gulf War, before that, only splinterproof vests were in service there.

In modern body armor, armor plates are used from the following materials:

  • titanium alloys (but not pure titanium!);
  • aluminum alloys;
  • armor steel;
  • UHMWPE (ultra high modulus polyethylene)
  • corundum (aluminum oxide);
  • silicon carbide;
  • boron carbide.

The last three materials are used to make protective plates, colloquially called ceramic, although this is by no means ceramic.

Each of the above materials has its own advantages and disadvantages, so there is no “ideal” among them. Thus, plates made of “ceramics”, in fact, often turn out to be stronger than titanium or aluminum armored ones, but they usually withstand only one hit. After that, the plate cracks, and it must be replaced (although the metal that held the bullet is also better to replace out of harm’s way). Protective plates made of UHMWPE are very strong and light, they stop shrapnel and blunt bullets well, but they do not withstand contact with fire – which means they are suitable only for police officers, but not for army body armor.

body armor vest

There are no universal solutions. Therefore, the “species diversity” of modern body armor is extremely large – only in our country at the moment there are more than a dozen different models of body armor of various designs – soft, semi-rigid (with partial reinforcement), rigid and others. Most of them, in addition to armours for concealed wearing and some models of police body armor, combine fabric and “hard” armor protection. Aramid fabric partially dampens the kinetic energy of the bullet, protects against its fragments (if the bullet scatters when hit) and provides protection against armor damage, which the main, rigid protective plate cannot provide.

The class of body armor is mainly determined by the class of the main protective plate installed in the chest compartment. Most modern bulletproof vests have a modular design: any plates at the user’s request can be installed in “covers” made of aramid fabric.
